5 Things You Must Know About Early Childhood Education Colleges

Finding good early childhood education colleges can be extremely difficult. Don't get me wrong – there are many colleges with early childhood education. Often, early childhood education degrees are bundled along with the rest of the school of education. In these colleges and universities, your early childhood education college curriculum is seen as basically a specialty within the school of education. Unfortunately, this is often a bad way to do it. Issues in K-12 are pretty constant, but early childhood education colleges handle some pretty unusual issues. They should be – and occasionally are – separated from the rest of the school of education.

When I started off on my degree program, I went to a community college early childhood education program. I wanted to get my associates degree in early childhood education. It is very easy to get jobs if you have a degree from early childhood education colleges. Unfortunately, it is not easy to come out of these programs knowledgeable about early childhood learning. The focus is on early childhood activity, as well as hands-on approaches to learning. Beyond this, however, the theory is almost always missing. There are few early childhood education colleges that really teach you all you need to know about childhood development issues.

Let me be frank with you – my early childhood education college degree taught me almost nothing. Of course, it gave me the ability to legally work with kids, and allowed me to make a living at it. Nevertheless, I didn't really know much about them. I just fell back on my experience working with kids in the past as a babysitter and then a tutor. If you want to understand childhood development, early childhood education classes are not the way to go. You will need to go to early childhood education colleges to get the state certification that you need to work with kids, but you'll have to take another degree program in order to gain actual knowledge of child psychology. A good college degree in psychology will help you tremendously.

There are some early childhood education colleges that actually teach enough about psychology, but there are very few of them. The best way to find out about them is to talk to someone with experience in the field. There are many early childhood education experts, Some of them in universities and other ones in the classroom. They can help you understand the relative merits of different early childhood education colleges.
